Google Hangouts app to now have free voice calling service

Google today began letting people use its Hangouts message application for mobile devices to make free or low-cost voice calls over the Internet. "Hangouts already makes it easy to send a quick message, or start a group video chat," Google product manager Amit Fulay said in a blog post.Calls are free between Hangouts users and to numbers in the United States or Canada, according to Fulay, who described international call rates as "really low."

Google has long said that Hangouts is the future of Google Voice. The regular Google Voice service and site will still continue to work for the time being and most importantly, Google says that if you have a Google Voice number today, it has no interest in taking that away from you.

To get started on Android, just grab the new version of Hangouts (v2.3)  then install the accompanying dialer to turn on voice calls. On iOS and the web, voice calls will be available the next time you open the app.
